2007

December 30, 2007

Interesting year. My day job has been great for the most part. Late summer was starting to get a little nerve racking when we had lost so much business and hadn’t landed anything new in quite a while. Luckily Subaru has turned things around. DJ wise, things went great and went badly. On the good side; I was able to get my first touring gig – playing at the Eccentrik Festival. That was such a wonderful experience. I got to meet some fantastic people, get to know some other great people who previously had only been online friends and I got to hear great music. On the bad side; Thursday night Bondage a Go Go ended right at the tail end of ‘07. That was a gig I had been doing for more then two years now. There were some very frustrating things about working Thursdays, but the bottom line was I was able to DJ every Thursday and now I’m not – that is a big bummer.

Personally things have also been up and down for me. I lost two Grandparents in ‘07 (I’m sitting here writing this in NC having just been to my Grandmother’s funeral yesterday) Both will be missed greatly. Physically I am more out of shape then I have been in a few years, I have also let myself go by eating very poorly the last few months. I am going to go back on the South Beach diet and start exercising much more in ‘08. I also plan on starting a very serous quit smoking program once my new insurance starts in January.

Overall I think ‘07 had more positives then negatives and that is a good thing.

Remember our NYE masquerade ball is tomorrow night – everyone should come.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer girl

December 27, 2007

Hotel magnate Barron Hilton announced yesterday that he’s leaving 97% of his wealth to charity, dramatically cutting the fortune his children and grandkids will get.

That means granddaughter Paris Hilton, who once stood to inherit $100 million or more by some accounts, could end up with a measly $5 million or so.

Guitar Hero

December 24, 2007

First off, let me say I suck at Guitar Hero, I played it once and was totally brutal.   I also know that Guitar Hero old and passe, even Guitar Hero 3 is a has been.  It’s all about Rock Band now.

All that said, I found this great description of someone coming across a teen just killing “Through the Fire and Flames” on expert.  Fire and Flames is a song that only unlocks when you finish the game, the description is awesome.

3, 4, 5 minutes into the song. Kyle slips deeper into what is clearly a state of Samadhi; He no longer perceives a space between himself and the game. There is no him. There is no song. There is no guitar.

At 6 minutes in, a small crowd has formed, perhaps 15 of us. His sravaka – his disciples – look nervously at us, absorbing the distractions, protecting him a bubble of calm. There is complete silence. Even my son is staring slackjawed, like he does in church during communion, not understanding the content of the ritual but understanding the tone and sacredness of the space.

Here is a youtube video of another kid killing the song.   Unbelievable.

Top Tech Villians of 2007

December 24, 2007

Mashable came out with “2007 In Review: Best of the Best” lists.

One of the categories is “Top Villains In Tech“.  Guess who is the first on the list… Live Journal

LiveJournal/Six Apart – LiveJournal, one of the most popular blogging platforms was purchased by Six Apart in 2005, and things seemed to go swimmingly until May of this year when, without warning, they started cracking down on accounts. People woke up to find their journals and communities deleted based solely on interests they had listed, and some of them truly were innocent. One of the most heinous examples was the deletion of a group dedicated to discussing the classic Vladimir Nabokov novel, Lolita, because it was believed to be a group dedicated to child pornography. They reinstated some accounts, just to do another round of pruning in July, angering even more customers. It really isn’t a surprise that Six Apart just sold it off.

Whopper Freakout

December 21, 2007

You may have seen the new Burger King ads where they take away the Whopper to see what people will do.
They have a whole site dedicated to it: WhopperFreakout.com. Pretty funny what people do actually.

On Wednesday I met a guy who is good friends of one of the actors who are pretending to be BK employees. The guy is getting big money for this campaign I guess.

End Of An Era

December 18, 2007

Last night we found out that Ground Zero will no longer be open on Thursdays or Fridays.

They are looking to do new formats on those nights, so they will reopen, but Bondage A Go Go and Corrosion are done.

BaGG has been running non-stop since the early 90’s – it’s a sad day.

Rouge Elf On The Loose

December 17, 2007

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada’s post office and police are trying to track down a “rogue elf” who wrote obscene letters to children on behalf of Santa Claus, a newspaper reported on Friday.

“We firmly believe there is just one rogue elf out there,” a Canada Post spokeswoman told the paper.

Canada Post’s popular “Write to Santa” program — which last year delivered more than a million letters to children in Canada and around the world — has been shut down in Ottawa until the offender is caught. Full Story
